Impinj’s New Reader | Impinj R720 RAIN RFID Reader
Only a few months after releasing the news about their new UHF Tag Chip – the M800 Series - Impinj released that they will be introducing a new UHF RFID Reader in 2024, the Impinj R720. The Impinj R720 will add new features to the R700 Reader Series and focus on enabling IoT solutions with optimized automation and speed.
A Quick Look
The Outside:
According to the rendering from Impinj, the R720 will look pretty similar to the R700 in terms of form factor and antenna ports, but there are some key updates on the inside that make the R720 standout.
The Inside:
The Impinj R720 has increased processing power and memory in order to meet the demands of on-reader applications in enterprise level environments. According to Jeff Dossett, Impinj’s chief revenue officer.
“The Impinj R720 reader delivers powerful edge processing to support application software and algorithms that collect and manage enterprise data at the source. Backed by Impinj’s industry-leading readability, the Impinj R720 further expands the capabilities of Impinj’s RAIN RFID platform.”
The Impinj R720 will have a 1.4 GHz (Quad-core) processor speed, compared to the R700’s 1 GHz (Dual-core) processor speed. The updated Qualcomm QCS404 quad-core, 1.4 GHz processer will allow for 3x greater processing speed than the Impinj R700.
Additionally, the memory size for on-reader applications, called the custom-application partition (CAP) will double in size, from the Impinj R700’s 128 MB to 256 MB. The additional memory will reduce network bandwidth and latency, and will allow for more robust on-reader applications to meet demanding RFID-tag environments.
The Impinj R720 UHF RFID Reader will support powering via 802.3at PoE+. Checkout the Impinj Reader comparison guide between the R720 and Impinj's previous readers.
